Amazon has revealed plans to build a £500m fulfilment centre in the East Midlands.
The online retail giant will create the huge depot at the Segro Logistics Park in Northampton.
Along with three floors of robotic product-picking technology, the centre will provide jobs for up to 2,000 people.
It will feature energy-efficient building management systems as Amazon works towards powering its operations solely through renewable energy by 2025.
Amazon regional director Neil Travis said the new site would create more than 2,000 new jobs, taking Amazon’s workforce in the East Midlands to more than 10,000 full and part-time roles.
“Amazon continues to invest in our buildings and innovative technology to provide our people with some of the most advanced workplaces of their kind in the world, ensuring their wellbeing while delivering for our customers,” he said.
Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce chief executive Louise Wall said: “Amazon’s investment in Northamptonshire will create thousands of new jobs in one of the most advanced buildings of its type in the world.
“This is a significant endorsement of the strategic location of the Segro Logistics Park Northampton and the importance of our region’s role in the UK logistics industry.”
Amazon declined to comment on whether a contractor had been chosen for the job.
Winvic has previously worked on a rail interchange hub and 10 logistics plots for the likes of Amazon and Games Workshop at Segro Logistics Park.
