Personalized beauty: How Revieve’s AI solutions are driving innovation at JCPenney

As the beauty industry increasingly embraces digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) are reshaping how consumers discover and purchase products. According to McKinsey & Company, personalization in beauty is expected to generate $800 billion in revenue growth by 2025, driven by consumers’ desire for tailored recommendations and interactive experiences.

Similarly, CB Insights reports that AI-powered personalization can increase customer engagement by up to 20% and boost conversion rates by more than 30%.

In line with these trends, Revieve, a global leader in AI-driven beauty technology, has partnered with JCPenney to enhance the retailer’s digital and in-store platforms with personalized skin care, hair care, and cosmetics solutions. By integrating advanced AI and AR technologies, the collaboration aims to create more engaging and immersive beauty experiences for JCPenney’s diverse customer base.

“Our partnership with JCPenney was born out of a shared vision to redefine the beauty shopping experience by placing the customer at the heart of innovation,” Sampo Parkkinen, CEO and Founder of Revieve told CosmeticsDesign. “JCPenney, with its rich history and dedication to inclusivity, represents a cornerstone in American retail.”

Further, he added, “Collaborating with such an iconic brand gave us an opportunity to merge their deep understanding of their customer base with Revieve’s forward-thinking technology.”

Paving the future of AI in beauty retail

Looking ahead, Revieve expects AI and AR technologies to continue reshaping the beauty retail landscape over the next five to ten years. According to Parkkinen, advancements in generative AI (Gen AI) and conversational AI will drive hyper-personalization and create more engaging shopping experiences.

“Generative AI and Conversational AI will play critical roles, delivering personalized recommendations, real-time assistance, and engaging, innovative customer interactions,” Parkkinen said. “We are enhancing the entire platform experience, including skin care, makeup, and hair care, while advancing our capabilities in generative AI.”

Revieve’s ongoing partnership with Google Cloud supports these innovations, enabling scalable, data-driven solutions that help brands anticipate consumer needs and optimize inventory and marketing strategies.

In addition to focusing on personalization, Revieve is committed to ensuring its AI solutions remain inclusive. The company’s proprietary computer vision algorithms analyze over 200 sub-metrics to provide accurate and personalized recommendations across diverse skin tones, hair types, and beauty concerns.

“Our advanced computer vision technology is calibrated to recognize diverse skin tones and hair types, ensuring accurate and inclusive recommendations,” said Parkkinen. “Continuous testing and user feedback help us refine our models and address any gaps in inclusivity.”

Driving business growth through AI adoption

For beauty retailers looking to enhance their customer experience with AI, Parkkinen advises taking a strategic, data-driven approach. He emphasized the importance of gathering zero- and first-party data to understand customer preferences and behaviors better.

“It’s crucial to invest in gathering rich zero and first-party data, which will give you valuable insights into your customers’ behaviors, preferences, and beauty concerns,” Parkkinen stated. “This data enables AI to provide personalized recommendations and experiences, which is essential for building customer loyalty and increasing engagement.”

Parkkinen also stressed the importance of omnichannel integration, scalable AI solutions, and partnering with experienced technology providers to maximize the benefits of AI adoption.

“Ensure that AI solutions work seamlessly across both digital and physical channels,” he advised. “Start with scalable AI solutions that are easy to implement, such as personalized product recommendations or virtual try-ons, and partner with experienced providers to ensure you’re unlocking powerful, scalable solutions designed specifically for the beauty retail sector.”

Expanding AI and AR capabilities

Revieve is continually enhancing its AI and AR capabilities to deliver more personalized beauty experiences. Recent advancements include the integration of generative AI across its key solutions, including the Skincare Advisor, Makeup Advisor, and Haircare Advisor.

“One of our biggest advancements has been the integration of cutting-edge Generative AI across our key solutions,” Parkkinen shared. “This allows us to analyze over 100 skin metrics and offer features like ‘Match My Look’ and ‘Shop the Look,’ where users can virtually recreate and buy entire makeup looks.”

Revieve’s Virtual Try-On (VTO) technology has also improved, with recent client feedback highlighting its realistic and accurate results. “Clients have noted how realistic and accurate our VTO technology is when compared to real-life applications,” Parkkinen said.

Beyond beauty, Revieve is exploring opportunities to expand its AI solutions to other industries, including health and wellness. Parkkinen believes these innovations will continue empowering brands and retailers to deliver more innovative, personalized experiences.

“We are already expanding our solutions beyond the beauty industry,” he confirmed. “Our collaborations in health and wellness, including pharmacies, are inspiring new solutions that cater to the unique needs of our clients.”

Parkkinen concluded that “by continuously evolving and expanding our network, we aim to provide cutting-edge solutions that help brands and businesses harness the full potential of AI, driving success in a broader range of sectors,”
