Resi specialist nets first league-table win

United Living beat the January blues by topping the monthly league table for the first time, winning £184.3m of work.

Two contract wins took the housing specialist to first place. The largest was a £160m contract to refurbish Huguenot House, a 1960s-built housing block near Leicester Square in central London.

As well as repairing the roofs, render and bricks, United Living will replace the windows in all flats.

The contractor was also selected by Sheffield City Council for the £24.3m Airey House redevelopment.

Last month’s winner, Bouygues UK, dropped out of the top 50 completely.

Morgan Sindall climbed two places to take second place, sweeping up 26 contracts – the highest number of the month.

Its biggest contract win was a £54m upgrade to the Marne Barracks facility in Catterick, Yorkshire, which was procured through the Ministry of Defence’s £5.1bn Defence Estate Optimisation Portfolio programme. Morgan Sindall will build nine new facilities and refurbish some of the garrison’s existing buildings.

Galliford Try rose 15 places to take third place, winning seven contracts worth a total £104.5m. The firm landed one of eleven spots on a £1bn framework for public sector projects in the North West of England, alongside Kier and ISG.

A single contract took Dragados to fourth place. The Spanish firm was appointed to the first stage of a contract to build a £100m freight terminal at the Port of Immingham in Lincolnshire.

Kier also had a good month, picking up eight contracts worth a total £93.8m. Among the contracts it won in January was a college campus redevelopment in Bournemouth and a £60m mental health hospital in Bexhill, Sussex.

Public sector specialist Ashe Construction made a rare appearance in the league table, helped to seventh place with a £65m contract to extend Bedford Health Village in Bedfordshire.

Modular specialist Reds10 finished January in eighth place, winning two military accommodation schemes. The larger, a £72.4m refurbishment of single-living accommodation in Norfolk, was procured from the NHS Shared Business Services Modular Buildings framework.

Wates dropped from sixth to tenth place, winning six contracts worth a total £65.5m.

The annual league table

Morgan Sindall remains at the top of the rolling annual league table with £2.46bn of work won in the past year – almost £800m more than its closest competitor, Galliford Try.

Balfour Beatty dropped from third spot to eleventh, with Wates moving up one spot to take its place.
